Your First Acupuncture Visit in Calgary — What to Expect
New to acupuncture? This page explains exactly what happens at your first visit — how the needles feel, what we treat, and why so many clients return for more.
The Most Common Question: Does It Hurt?
Acupuncture needles are hair-thin — approximately the diameter of a human hair. Most clients feel little to no sensation on insertion. You may notice a brief dull ache, warmth, or slight tingling at the needle site — this is called “De Qi” in TCM and is considered a therapeutic response, not a problem. Within minutes of needles being placed, most clients feel a wave of deep relaxation. Many fall asleep on the table.

Your First Visit, Step by Step
Your first acupuncture appointment is longer than subsequent visits — typically 75–90 minutes — because your practitioner needs to take a comprehensive health history using both Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnostic frameworks.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the lower arms, lower legs, and abdomen. Eat a light meal 1–2 hours beforehand — don’t arrive on an empty stomach.
Comprehensive Intake
Your practitioner reviews health history, current symptoms, sleep, digestion, and emotional state — the full TCM diagnostic picture, not just the chief complaint.
TCM Assessment
Pulse reading at three positions on each wrist and tongue inspection — the primary TCM diagnostic tools that reveal internal patterns.
Needle Placement
Hair-thin sterile single-use needles are placed at selected acupuncture points. You rest with needles for 20–30 minutes — most clients relax deeply or sleep.
Treatment Plan Discussion
After your session, your practitioner explains their findings, what they expect to improve, and a recommended treatment frequency.
First Visit Questions
A typical treatment uses between 6 and 20 needles depending on the condition and the practitioner’s style. Some points are powerful enough that a single needle at the right location achieves significant results.
Acute conditions often respond in 3–6 sessions. Chronic, long-standing conditions typically require more — often 8–12 weekly treatments before a maintenance schedule. Your practitioner will give a realistic expectation at your first visit.
