Decompression Therapy

The Only Massage Technique That Lifts Instead of Compresses

Every massage technique applies downward pressure into the tissue. Cupping does the opposite — silicone or glass cups create suction that lifts the skin, fascia, and superficial muscle layers, separating tissue that has become adhered. This decompression dramatically improves blood flow, releases fascial restrictions, and creates space for the muscle tissue beneath to relax in a way that compression-only techniques can’t achieve.

Why Add Cupping

What Cupping Adds to Your Treatment

Fascial Decompression
Lifts adhered fascia away from underlying structures — addressing restrictions that compression massage physically cannot reach.
Enhanced Circulation
Suction pulls fresh blood into the cupped area — the characteristic circular marks are evidence of increased local circulation, not bruising.
Stubborn Knot Release
Effective for knots and adhesions that have been resistant to regular massage — particularly in the upper trapezius, rhomboids, and IT band.
Active Recovery Support
A favourite among athletes for post-training recovery — improves muscle recovery speed and reduces the duration of DOMS.
Back & Shoulder Relief
Particularly effective for the chronic tension patterns that accumulate in the back, neck, and shoulders from desk work and repetitive strain.
Respiratory Support
Cupping on the upper back can help loosen the muscles around the ribcage, supporting deeper breathing and chest expansion.

About the Marks — What You Should Know

The circular discolourations left by cupping are not bruises. They result from increased blood flow to the area and indicate how much stagnation was present in the tissue. Darker marks mean more restricted circulation — they fade within 3–7 days.

Most people find cupping feels like a tight pulling sensation — unusual, but not painful. Intensity is adjustable throughout your session.

1

Assessment & Preparation

Your RMT identifies restricted areas and applies oil to allow cups to glide smoothly.

2

Static Cupping

Cups placed on specific tight areas for 5–10 minutes to decompress the tissue and draw blood to the surface.

3

Dynamic (Sliding) Cupping

Cups glide along the muscle belly — covering more surface area and creating a myofascial release effect.

4

Follow-Up Massage

Manual massage after cupping is dramatically more effective — the tissue has been pre-released and responds immediately to targeted pressure.

Common Questions

Circular discolourations are common and indicate increased circulation in the treated area — not bruising. They are painless and fade within 3–7 days. Your RMT will discuss this before starting.

Most clients describe the sensation as unusual but not painful — a tight pulling or stretching feeling. Suction intensity is fully adjustable. Tell your RMT if anything is uncomfortable.

Cupping is not recommended over broken skin, varicose veins, bony areas, or on those taking blood thinners. It’s also avoided during pregnancy. Please disclose your health history when booking.

Many clients notice significant improvement in one or two sessions for acute tension. Chronic restrictions typically benefit from 3–6 treatments. Results are cumulative.
