Alberta Health Care — the provincial public insurance plan — does not cover registered massage therapy (RMT), acupuncture, or most other complementary and alternative health services. Coverage under AHC is limited to medically necessary services delivered by physicians, hospitals, and a narrow set of other regulated health professionals.

This is consistent across all Canadian provinces. Massage therapy and acupuncture are considered extended health benefits, not insured services under provincial plans.

Private Insurance and Employer Benefits

The good news: the vast majority of Canadians with employer-sponsored benefits or private health insurance have coverage for massage therapy. Coverage is typically structured as a dollar amount per year (for example, $500 or $750 annually), sometimes split across multiple disciplines.

What Is Direct Billing?

Direct billing means that Calgary Healing Hands submits your insurance claim on your behalf, directly to your insurer, at the time of your appointment. You pay only the portion not covered by your plan — in many cases, nothing out of pocket at all.

Without direct billing, you would pay the full session fee and then submit a claim yourself to be reimbursed. Direct billing eliminates that step entirely, making it much easier to use your benefits consistently throughout the year.

Do You Need a Doctor’s Referral?

No referral is required to book massage therapy or acupuncture at Calgary Healing Hands. You can book directly online, by phone, or in person.

Some insurance plans may require a physician’s referral for reimbursement — check your specific plan terms. However, this is becoming increasingly rare as plans recognize the independent clinical value of RMTs and acupuncturists.

Health Spending Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

Massage therapy performed by a registered massage therapist is an eligible medical expense under the Canada Revenue Agency’s definition, which means it qualifies for HSA and FSA reimbursement. Many Calgarians use their HSA balance to cover massage and acupuncture sessions not fully covered by their main benefits plan.
